Congratulation Gerard !
Our very own Gerard Dumas returns from the Reno Pole Vault Summit where he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award in front of a capacity crowd of 2000 from around the world that were attending this annual prestigious event. French champion in the 1950s, for over 10 years Gerard was nationally ranked as an athlete in Canada’s top ten following his immigration in the early 1960s. Gerard has coached with Vic Track since 1966…and continues to this day. Now in his 80s, Gerard has jumped continuously since 1948 and has over 1100 competitions under his belt. Over the years his athletes have been on national teams to the Olympics, Commonwealth and Pan-am games, as well as national, provincial and high school champions. Without Gerard, pole vault in Victoria would not be what it is, and many of us would never have been introduced to this event. Howard Joe, one of the clubs masters athletes also attending at Reno (ranked #2 in Canada in 2016) provided the following video of the presentation in Reno. Please join me in congratulating Gerard!
2016 Fall Training Program
Details: This fall there are 2 programs for athletes wishing to train in the off season.
The first is for Midget(14/15) or older aged athletes. This will be Tuesday after school at Oak Bay track from 4-5 pm as well as a weekend session at Oak Bay track, Henderson Park, or Beacon Hill park from 9:30-11 am.
The second program is for 13 year olds and under and is on Saturday mornings 9.30am-10.30am.
The general practice outline will be:
10-15 minute warm up (light jog- with coaches to dictate slow pace)
10 minute dynamic drills (leg swings, A’s B’s C’s, etc)
for younger athletes 10-15 minutes strength and core exercise
for older athletes 15-20 minutes strength and core exercise
for younger athletes remaining 20 minute running work out + 5 minute cool down jog and stretch
for older athletes 30 minute running workout + 10 minute cool down jog and stretch
Tuesday Evenings 4-5pm (older/more focus group)
15 minute warm up (light jog)
10 minute dynamic drills
30 minute running workout
5-10 minute cool down + stretch
The focus of these workouts is to increase mileage slowly over the course of the next few months to build a solid base of endurance for the track season and for a safe and healthy cross country/ track career as the kids develop.
Please note on the attached calendar there are 3 potential conflicts/alterations.
1. October 8 when our coaches will be attending a youth endurance course here in Victoria so the practice will be Sunday Oct 9th. Athletes and their parents can attend this course too ( separate registration is required, see link below for details).
2. October 15-16. One or both coaches hope to attend coach education here on the island . They are hoping to substitute a coach for that weekend’s practice.
3. October 29. BC Cross Country championships are being held in Nanaimo so some athletes will attend the meet hopefully but the workout at Oak Bay track will still be held.

ABOUT VICTORIA TRACK AND FIELD CLUB
Welcome to the website of the Victoria Track and Field Club. We are a non-profit competitive track and field club which has been in existence in Victoria for over 50 years. The club is involved in training athletes, coaches and officials in the Greater Victoria area.
The Victoria Track and Field Club is a registered society and we rely on our parents and volunteers to assist in the organization of club events and training.
Our club has two main training groups:
- Track and Field is general track and field training for athletes ages 9 and older.
- Pole Vault training goes on all year with indoor training at Oak Bay Secondary School in the fall and winter and outdoor training at Centennial Stadium at the University of Victoria in the spring and summer.
Our club is a member of the Vancouver Island Athletic Association [VIAA] which is an informal association of all the competitive track and field clubs located on Vancouver Island and Powell River [Zone 6]. Members assist the other clubs in hosting and officiating at the VIAA Track and Field Series ~ a series of 4 to 6 track meets held from April to June each year.
